Slowly, Aura is able to work her way into Royal’s affections and make him reveal some of the emotions he’s kept locked away for so long. However, she quickly realizes there’s another side to Royal’s harsh exterior, and becomes dedicated to understanding him and finding a way to make him smile again. He’s pretty distant from everyone in the household, and is especially harsh towards Aura when she first shows up despite her best efforts to get to know him. Royal is just a gigantic (well, 2 or 3 foot tall initially) grump. On his route, Aura helps Sol resolve his tense relationship with his brother and ease the stress that being his father’s heir has caused him. His constantly calling the protagonist “My Lady” fits the archetype to a T, too. He is very kindhearted and has rigid ideas about how to treat a “lady,” causing him to regularly disapprove of how Deon and Royal sometimes treat Aura. He strives to be mature and dependable, and looks down somewhat on Deon for being so carefree and shirking his responsibilities. Sol is the younger d’Locke brother, but was made heir by his father during his childhood – making him an actual prince. With the protagonist’s help, though, Deon can move on from his past and become the responsible adult she knows he can be. Deon’s tragic backstory explains his seeming lack of maturity and inappropriate behavior even as the eldest son of the household. He’s also very kind to Aura despite the occasional weird comment, and welcomes him into the mansion and his private world even when other characters are skeptical of her. He definitely has the lack of maturity and responsibility that characterize friendly types, and he regularly plays pranks and avoids his duties around the house. The curse traps her in the mansion as well, and she is forced to start looking for a way to break the spell.ĭeon is much flirtier with the protagonist than the standard friendly type character, but he doesn’t really have the entirety of the player type “feel” to him either. She tries to take a shortcut through the cursed Loop Forest, only to become terribly lost and stumble upon the infamous d’Lockes mansion, home of a family that has been cursed to remain in the house in the form of sentient children’s toys. The premise of the game is that the protagonist, Aura, leaves home to work in a neighboring town. It’s definitely weird being flirted with by toy bears, but if you can get past that, it’s definitely worth a try! The writing doesn’t fall short either, and though I have to admit that the protagonist is a little bit too weepy/obtuse/insecure for my personal tastes, she did have a personality. Everything is so polished, despite one or two tiny typos, with a plethora of CGs, cute character sprites (both in their toy and human forms), and thematically-appropriate GUI. For a free game, the artwork is phenomenal, easily matching a lot of games that actually cost money. Locked Heart is a gorgeous visual novel by Otome Dice.
